No changes to Barton Under Needwood fire cover

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say fire cover in the Barton Under Needwood area won't be affected while work takes place over the next few months.

The Fire Station's getting a revamp as part of a fifty million pound private finance initiative.

The work on the Short Lane site is expected to be finished by Christmas and includes new rooms that can be used by local community groups.

Woman charged with attempted murder

A 47 year old woman's been charged with attempted murder in Polesworth.

Catherine Pegg form Austrey has also been charged with drink driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision with a man walking his dog on Bridge Street on Tuesday.

She's been remanded in custody and will appear before Nuneaton magistrates today.

The man remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Appeal for Lichfield Torch Relay helpers

A plea's been made for more volunteers to come forward to help out when the Olympic Torch comes to Lichfield.

Around sixty people have already put forward their name to help out on the 30th of June.

But the district council still needs forty people to make up the numbers - to be route and car park marshalls and street dressers.

Rowett's plans for Brewers

Gary Rowett says his first priority is apointing an assistant manager to help run Burton Albion's first team.

The new Brewers boss also says he wants veteran Kevin Poole to stay on as goalkeeping coach.

Rowett was named permanent successor to Paul Peschisolido last week.

He'd been caretaker boss since March and lead them to League Two safety.

New parking charges at Lichfield Hospital

Hospital bosses in Lichfield hope nearly doubling some parking charges will stop people misusing the car park.

New prices are being introduced at the Samuel Johnson Community Hospital today to bring them in line with those at Burton's Queen's Hospital.

The Foundation Trust running the hospital say they want to stop people parking there to go shoppping or get to the train station.

Brewers appoint new manager

Gary Rowett has been named the full time manager of Burton Albion Football Club.

He took over in a caretaker role when Paul Peschisolido was sacked in March, after serving as the Canadian's number two.

Rowett went on to halt the team's 14 game winless run and guide them to safety in League Two.

Burton Albion Chairman Ben Robinson said, 'I'm very pleased to be able to announce Gary Rowett as our new manager. Gary took over at a difficult time for the Club after a long string of poor results and he has been able to achieve safety in the Football League which was the primary aim.

'We now look forward to a summer where I am sure the necessary changes will be made as we plan for the upcoming 2012/13 season.

'I have been impressed by Gary both during his time as assistant and caretaker manager and I have every faith that he will prove to be a success as the manager of Burton Albion on a full time basis.'

Tories retain control of Tamworth Borough Council, but Labour swing sees them take control of Cannock Chase.

The Conservatives have retained control of Tamworth Borough Council.

A third of seats were being contested in Thursday's local elections and reflecting the national picture, Labour managed to pick up for 4 seats from the Tories.

Amongst the gains, Conservative councillor for Wilnecote Ward Mary Oates lost her seat to Labour's Patrick Standen.

Meanwhile there has been a swing to Labour in Cannock Chase.

They've picked up 7 of the 14 seats up for election yesterday to take over overall control, including Hednesford North, Hednesford South and Norton Canes.

The Lib Dems were the big losers there, losing 4 seats.

Two dead and six injured in A38 crash

Two women have been killed and six people injured in a collision near Burton.

Two people have died and six injured after a crash near Burton.

Emergency services, including four ambulances and two air ambulances, were called to a collsion involving two cars on the A38 at Branston on Friday evening.

Two women in one of the vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three teenagers and a 4 year old girl were among 6 others taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find two cars that had been in a serious collision. Both vehicles had
suffered extensive damage.

"All emergency services worked seamlessly together at the scene to ensure the patients received the best treatment as quickly and safely as
possible."

Transport Secretary Justine Greening has given the green light to the £32 billion project. The scheme known as 'HS2' will cut journey times between London and Birmingham to 49 minutes but will could change some of our communities forever as it ploughs through the countryside on its route.

The first phase is expected to be complete by 2026 with an extension north of Birmingham complete by 2032/2033.

Last year our reporter Nick Jewers spoke to people involved in the HS2 project....those who want it built and those who could lose their homes because of it.
